Marine Omega-3 is concentrated marine fish oil providing efficacious amounts of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). EPA and DHA are vital to the normal functioning of cardiovascular and neurological health. Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) have been studied for more than 30 years, resulting in more than 7,000 reports, and nearly 900 human clinical trials.(3) Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have positive effects on the heart, brain, joints, skin and even pregnancy.* Studies have evaluated the multiple ways omega-3s promote cardiovascular health, in addition to the healthy functioning of many other biological activities.

What is Omega-3?
Omega-3 is the name for a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). There are two main families of PUFA: omega-3s and omega-6s. The predominant sources of omega-3s are vegetable oils and fish. There are three types of omega-3 fatty acids:
1. alpha linolenic acid (LNA) is an important plant-based source of omega-3s, found in such foods as tofu, canola oil, walnuts and flaxseed.
2. eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are a very long-chain fatty acids obtained from cold-water ocean fish such as sardines, herring, mackerel, albacore tuna and salmon – hence, fish oil.
Omega-3s are required for normal human health.(1) They affect many physiological processes including cognitive function, visual acuity, immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory actions, anti-thrombotic and anti-arrhythmia activities along with having major effects on whole body glucose and lipid metabolism.(2)
How much fish oil is in Marine Omega-3?
When looking to purchase fish oil supplements, it is important to look for the EPA and DHA content. EPA and DHA are the fatty acids thought responsible for the health benefits of fish oil. Nutraceutics’ Marine Omega-3 contains 300 mg EPA and 200 mg DHA (500 mg omega-3) per softgel. That is almost double the amount of omega-3s found in most health food store brands. People taking omega-3s for the heart healthy benefit are usually advised to consume 1-2 grams of EPA and DHA per day. The FDA recommends not exceeding more than 2 grams per day from supplementation. The 500 mg of EPA and DHA contained in each Marine Omega-3 softgel allows for exact dosing up to 2 grams.
Should I be concerned about mercury and other environmental toxins in the fish supply?
Mercury occurs naturally in the environment but can also be released into the air through industrial pollution. Mercury falls from the air and can accumulate in streams and oceans where it is turned into methylmercury in the water. It is this type of mercury that can be harmful to you, your unborn baby and young children.
Nearly all fish and shellfish absorb traces of methylmercury from the water. However, the longer a fish lives, the higher its levels of methylmercury will be. These large fish (swordfish, shark, king mackerel and tilefish) pose the greatest risk.

Are fish oil supplements safer than eating fish?
A study published in the January 2005 issue of the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine concluded that fish oil supplements may be safer than eating fish, at least from the standpoint of toxic impurities. The authors write, “Fish oil supplements are more healthful than the consumption of fish high in organochlorines (pesticides).” At Nutraceutics, our fish oil supplement provides the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids without the risk of toxicity.
Which is better for your heart, fish oil supplements or eating fresh fish?
If you are happy eating a least two good-sized portions of oil-rich fish a week, this should provide you with sufficient omega-3 oils to maintain a healthy heart and circulation. However, if you cannot guarantee you will eat this amount, fish oils in supplement form may be an option. One piece of research conducted over two years showed that there were no differences between the effects of eating oil-rich fish twice a week and taking fish oil capsules daily for two years (DART sub-group analysis). Supplements offer the additional benefit of supplying a measurable amount of omega-3 whereas the amounts in fish vary, and the toxic impurities have to be considered.
